How to Decorate Smaller Living Spaces

SPACES ARE GETTING SMALLER

Real Estate is getting more expensive and new homes and condominiums are getting smaller. It is common to find 400 to 700 sq/ft studios and one bedrooms these days. How can these smaller spaces be decorated and still feel spacious? Here are some tips and things to keep in mind when decorating smaller living spaces.

DON’T CLUTTER

Only look for furniture and accessories which you need and are practical. A condo size sofa with one or two occasional chairs is perfect when you require seating and have limited space. Today many furniture pieces are being made to scale for smaller spaces.

LOOK FOR FUNCTIONAL FURNITURE PIECES

Functional furniture is ideal for smaller spaces.  For the occasional guest, a sofa which will convert into a sofabed is a great option. Tables which have storage space, storage ottomans, flat screen tv’s which hang on the wall like a picture frame are ideal choices. There are many functional furniture pieces available these days in a variety of designs and colours.

SETTING UP YOUR ROOM

Placing your sofa along a wall will maximize your space. Placing furniture on an angle takes more space and makes the room feel smaller. Don’t block access to balcony doors as balconies can be an extension to your room. Allow natural light to enter the room.

USE SOME ACCENT COLOURS WHEN DECORATING

Adding colour is a great idea to add interest to your room. Today’s furniture finishes and coverings come in many textures and colours. Smaller colour accents can be done with throw pillows or area rugs, which are very effective and inexpensive.
